Birthday Presents

It is Kayla's birthday, and we are having a little party for her with some play group friends. It is time for her to open her presents.

Kayla sits down on the couch with all the other children around her, and is given a present to unwrap.

Cash - "My present? Another one?"
Me - "Today is Kayla's birthday, so all the presents are for her. On your birthday, you will get all the presents."

Legend, upon realizing none of the presents are for him, runs bawling down the hall.

Kayla gets another present.
Cash - "Where's mine? I want one."
Me - "Sorry, Cash. Today is Kayla's day so the presents are for her. You will get presents on your birthday. Do you understand?"
Cash - "Okay, Auntie." He sits quietly and watches Kayla open her gift.

Legend comes into the living room, and bawls, just to make sure I have heard him.
Me - "Legend, honey..."
He runs away from me, down the hall, to bawl some more.

Kayla is given one last present.
Cash - "Kayla's present, Auntie? Where's Cash's?"
Me - "All the presents are Kayla's. It is Kayla's special day. Understand? You will have a special day soon, okay?"
Cash, a little sad - "Okay, Auntie."

Legend comes into the living room.
Legend, pointing at Kayla's final present - "Mine!"
Me - "It is Kayla's turn to play with that toy, Legend. You will get a turn later. Do you want to read a story or play dinosaur's with mommy?"
Legend - "NO!"

He runs away again. He needs a long hug and talk to work through this one.

It must be difficult to be as selfish as a toddler.
